The origins of the Green Man are lost in our pagan past but a motif of a foliate human head appears commonly within church architecture, usually sited somewhere unobtrusive, perhaps on a roof boss or beneath a misericord seat. It is unclear exactly who the eponymous character represents - some say it is Herne the Hunter, others claim it is the Green Knight of Arthurian legend but a common theme of renewal and rejuvenation emerges. As such, Green Man ornaments are entirely appropriate for the garden, for they represent the passing of the seasons and in particular the coming of the Spring.
